Fripp Island Community Centre
Library
In 1980 soon after the Fripp Island Community Centre opened its doors, there was a place for exchanging books. Thus a book that had been read could be recycled to someone who had not read it. By the mid-1990s this system consisted of a couple of baskets in the community room where people could trade books. When Gail Jordan, a former school principal, retired to Fripp she helped get a library started with the relocation of the books to the small meeting room and the purchase of six large book shelves.
In 2001 the library received a major boost when Sandy Buschur, a retired librarian, agreed to become the Centre’s librarian. In the last six years the library has undergone remarkable growth. Now there are over 4,000 books with is an amazingly fine collection of biographies, history (particularly World War II), poetry, juvenile/youth section and reference books as well as a very large fiction section divided into subgroups such as popular, classics, and mysteries. And the library also has a growing number of books on tape, videos, CDs, and DVDs.
The Centre’s library is a legitimate lending library. While there is no set time for how long books may be borrowed, it is expected that all items will be returned. The check out procedure is based on the honor system where by each borrower places a quarter in the box for each item taken. These small donations are then used to buy supplies for the library. The library has a separate door so may be entered when the Community Centre is closed. The hours are Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
If people would like to give books, tapes, or CDs to the Centre, there is a place marked in the library for donations. Sandy requests that books be in good condition and in most cases published fairly recently. She is also interested in increasing the large print collection. She has limited shelf space and thus is seeking books that people will want to read.
